Char Char brand development, placemaking signage, and environmental applications

Char Char

A refined reintroduction on Fremantle’s working waterfront.

For over a decade, Char Char has held a defining position along Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour. A place where the working harbour backdrop remains as iconic as the menu. With a new architectural direction by Matthew Crawford Architects and a shift in name and tone, the time came for a considered reintroduction.

Barbitta was engaged to lead the rebranding of the venue, formerly known as Char Char Bull. The new identity sought to retain the familiarity of the original while introducing greater clarity, maturity, and spatial cohesion. The scope included brand development, placemaking signage, and environmental applications that worked in parallel with the architectural transformation.

Guided by the AtmosphereForm, and Story tiles of the Barbitta Mosaic™, the approach was restrained yet expressive. The identity was refined to reflect the restaurant’s evolving audience, while still holding onto its coastal character and broad appeal.

Placemaking was integrated into the site through material alignment and scale. Every touchpoint was designed to sit confidently within the newly built establishment.
