Black Swan State Theatre Season Launch
A cinematic setting for a season of theatre and transformation.
Each year, Black Swan invites its community of theatre-goers, artists, crew, patrons, and supporters, to gather for an evening that sets the tone for the year ahead. More than a launch, it is a moment of anticipation and shared imagination, where the creative director unveils the season’s vision to those who carry it forward.
For this year’s launch, the historic Liberty Theatre in Perth became the backdrop. Once one of the city’s first art house cinemas, the theatre holds with it a sense of faded grandeur, echoing past performances. It offered a setting not just of nostalgia, but of alignment. A place where light, story, and audience have always met.
Barbitta was engaged to shape the entire visual and spatial experience. Inside the theatre, branded elements were revealed in fragments. Show posters emerging within the architecture, while the original cinema screen was reactivated to frame each new work as it was introduced. This interplay of space and story created a launch that was as performative as it was informative.
Guided by the Story, Atmosphere, and Meaning tiles of the Barbitta Mosaic™, the launch was choreographed as a layered encounter. Physical presence, graphic language, and moving image worked together to honour the craft and complexity of what was being unveiled.
Alongside the event experience, Barbitta also produced the full season campaign, including art direction, photography, videography, and the printed program. The result is a coherent expression of a season, made visible in multiple forms, each with its own sense of weight and tone.
